Important Information for Web Users
HeartBleed is a software bug that was a security leak in software code. It was recently discovered, however the leak has been around for almost two years. A fix was released on April 7th. At that time the estimate was that 17% of the web servers were affected but within days most of the major webservers were patched. This does NOT mean any of them were ever hacked.
What was affected: User names and passwords, credit cards, bank passwords could have been compromised or encryption keys broken however the hacker must have been aware of this vulnerability also. The greater danger exists once the announcement is made, and then only at sites that use Open SSL and haven’t patched it yet.
Individuals should update their passwords across the various Web pages they use, but only once they have confirmed a site has already taken the proper measures to address Heartbleed. If they don't and that site is still at risk, the new password could also be compromised. Many sites will also likely send e-mails instructing customers to update passwords if necessary.
